SILVER EWER BY WILLIAM ADAMS WITH
CREST. This is a nicely detailed silver ewer by William Adams. The piece features repousse vines, leaves and clusters of grapes. The branch handle has the realistic texture of actual branch/twigs. It is marked on base W. ADAMS NEW YORK. (William Adams produced large amounts of superior quality silver during his career, and worked in New York, New York 1829-1862). [As well as a highly talented silversmith, he was also quite politically active, serving as Assistant Alderman (1840-42), President of the Board of Alderman (1842-43), Alderman (1847-48), and Commissioner of Repairs and Supplies (1850, 1852). Some of his highly important silver commissions include creating a new silver mace for the House of Representatives in 1841, and producing the presentation urn given to Senator Henry Clay by the Gold and Silver Artisans of the City of New York, in appreciation for Clay's historic work increasing the tariff on foreign gold and silver goods--forty (40%) percent--the most important piece of 19th Century legislation affecting the American silver industry. The increased duty on imported silverware made it impossible for foreign firms to succeed and allowed our silversmiths to finally flourish.] The hinged lid is firmly attached (small inside split where hinge attaches to lid--see photo). The top features a cluster of grapes with a twig for a handle. The ewer has a graceful spout, and a pedestal base. The base has vine & leave repousse pattern. The front displays an ornate family? crest with a horse on top (catching a spear in its mouth) and various horses on the shield crest. The ewer is in very good condition (minor dings on side) measures approx. 8" tall By 4-1/2" wide and weighs 15.8 ounces on my postal scale UNBOXED. |
